Bear necessities... By James, Floriane & Anne-Sophie

For the second time, in down-town Sapporo (Japan), three brown bears have been seen looking for food last week. They were starving, due to the bad weather and also because there isn’t enough food in the forest. They made the town messy by braking shop fronts and destroying bins with the hope of finding some leftovers. Inhabitants were shocked by these unusual visitors. Authorities warned everybody of the bears' dangerous presence and tried to capture them.

The last time some poor bears tried to find food in the city, the local authorities killed them... This problem will probably happen again because of the lack of food in the forests.

It’s amazing to see bears in a town in Japan. We’re shocked that authorities wanted to kill them. If bears came to the city to find food, it’s surely due to the city encroaching on the forest and that’s why they lack of food.

First of all, we have been surprised since we didn’t know that there were bears in Japan. If bears are able to search for leftovers in the cities, as a consequence people’s lives could be threatened… It seems that the radical solution of the authorities is responsible, nonetheless, they could just anesthetize them... We think that the inhabitants can give food in forest for the bears, for example. Moreover, the real problem is the relation between humanity and wilderness. So are you sacred by the nature? To our mind, we have not to be scared by the nature.

  3. Bears need to feed so they have the right to go to Sapporo in order to survive. Local authorities had a very bad reaction against this “threat”, as the last time they killed them, so we wish that this time they try another solution to resolve this problem.
