Bubble tax... By Clotilde, Clémence & Marion

In this article from La Montagne, published on September 28th, the journalist writes about the tax rise which will be voted in October on sodas. The aim is to fight obesity in Europe. This proposal has provoked controversy. Coca Cola has threatened to suspend its investment in Europe.

These new taxes, we feel, will not have a real impact on obesity levels. But we all know that the Government will raise 120 million Euros. Are taxes on sodas not more beneficial to the government than on the health of the population?

Sure, you're right saying that obesity won't decrease with taxes on sodas. But the social security in France needs money, the gouvernment has to find a way to save it, so taxes on sodas might be one way to help France, by earning more money and perhaps by fighting a little against obesity. Furthermore it may be to polish the french image, since people in the world have a vision of slim french people, yet it isn't really the case.

  2. We think that this taxe will not change the population's habits, and probably will not have a real impact on obesity while the government will steal money. Personally, we prefer just not to pay taxes, so the government should tax sodas only for obeses... :)

I'm sure that this taxe won't be a big change for us (but for teh governement!)I don't understand why taxing sweet drinks is so important because we drink in moderation this kind of drinkd , we are always in a spirit of prevention against obesity ! Maybe Governement should think about another way to bail out the state instead of trying to dissuade us from drinking soda, and personally pay a couple cents more my sweet drink will not change my consumption

  4. In my opinion, the government did the right thing since it prevents people that a lot of them are going obese... I think it is to help us to say "okay just one sometimes" and to reduce our consumption or to stop completely buy sodas !
However, business are so worried as their turnovers will decrease and take them to economics difficulties.
