Do you give money to beggars on the street? By Anne-Sophie

Some of the homeless people you go past in the street have really creative - humorous - signs to gain your attention. They laugh about their own dire situation, thereby showing that they have a little dignity left... They are demonstrating the humanity giver and taker have in common. It's often an efficient technique to gain alms ! In a sense you, the giver, are paying for having had a good laugh; you feel good about giving because you are not too embarrassed.

There are those who tell passers-by the disarming truth : they need money for drugs, alcohol, whatever. It's a kind of desperate, aggressive, black humour...

Others try to gain your pity. They tell you they need money for their family, their children or for someone else. You wonder if you should believe them, and by the time you have found the answer, you have walked past the problem...

In some countries, beggars do not speak at all, they supplicate on their knees, face down, hands shut tight in front of them. Sometimes they are even prostrate on the ground... How humiliating !

  1. Personnaly, I know a beggar and I know that he really needs money or just some food.
But the liers just need money and they can be very aggressive if you give something else...

One day, I give an apple to a "beggar" and he yelled at me that he wanted only money! I think that he did not really need food...
So, due to that behavior, I no longer want to give something to these people.

Moreover, some people are so poor that they must humiliate themselfs to earn some money, which can still make us think of the necessity of giving..

  2. Most of us already gave some money to the homeless however we focus on a lot of conditions like creativity or humorous and pleasant actions.
Moreover, there also a lot of people who are trying to earn some cash even if they have some wealthy stuff. We are opposed to every homeless who are some "fakes" and have in their pocket an Iphone for example or pretty shoes ( for example)
A recent study, shown that homeless who try to use pity dont earn a lot of money . The tourists dont want to see all the outcasts of society and it epitomize misery.

  3. I though spending money by this way is touching and funny at the same time.
People want to give money because there is a real reason and humour push them to do it !
However, when I cross a poor men in the street just wanted money, with a sad face and doesn't talk to anyone, I pass my way because I don't know why he wants money... Maybe it is for drugs and I will kill him.
